Is inquiry bad for novice learners?

Have you read this blog post by Adam Boxer about novices and experts? It’s definitely worth a read if you liked the article about expert memory I wrote about some time ago. The author of the post explains how we acquire the existing knowledge of a subject and, as we become experts, go on to create new knowledge (through investigation and inquiry). He comes to an interesting conclusion: teaching novices through the method of inquiry is an error. I have seen examples that prove this point of view, and examples that contradict it – what about you?
